North American land drillers are expected to report higher working rig numbers in the first quarter as the market improves, helped by higher oil prices and more efficient drilling units.

At the end of the fourth quarter 2017, Calgary-based Precision Drilling was running 65 rigs in the US, its highest market share since it entered the country in 2006.

The company expects its US land rig count to hit the low-70s in the first quarter, "with customer indications for further rig activations during the second quarter", chief executive Kevin Neveu said earlier this year.
