Bakrie himself has escaped prosecution over the incident despite some officials of both Lapindo and drilling contractor Medici Citra Nusa being named as suspects.

"Bakrie is still wealthy while others are starving," says one industry source of those displaced by the mud and awaiting their full compensation payouts.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been accused of protecting Bakrie, who part-financed his 2004 election campaign, from prosecution - an allegation the president has frequently denied.

The
