Plans by Canada's federal government to allow oil and gas activities in a proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA) off Newfoundland & Labrador have been heavily criticised by environmental groups.
The government gazetted plans late last month to create an 11,600-square kilometre MPA — the largest in Canada — in the Laurentian Channel in order to protect the area’s biodiversity from human activities that pose a risk.
