Early last year, Masa's operator Petronas surprised international contractors when it awarded the field development contract, which involves the construction of Malaysia's first ever floating production facility, to industry upstart Trenergy in partnership with Statoil of Norway. Trenergy in turn awarded the conversion contract for a floating production, storage and offloading vessel to Malaysia Shipyard and Engineering, which had no prior experience in the sector.

THE PLUMMETING value of Malaysia's currency has sparked a row between state-run exploration company Petronas Carigali and feisty local contractor Trenergy over the cost of developing the Malong, Sotong and Anding oilfields, collectively known as Masa, off the coast of south-east Malaysia.
