Last weekend it was finally confirmed that Norway will not open blocks off the Lofoten, Vesteraalen and Senja islands for oil and gas exploration in the foreseeable future.
Until now, the country’s three large political parties have constituted a majority in favour of giving petroleum companies access to the blocks, even if they have kept the acreage closed for almost two decades to secure parliamentary support from smaller, environmentalist parties.
