Being so close to the Gulf with access to big, modern docks and slips -- some covered and lighted for round-the-clock, all-weather operations -- makes Port Fourchon attractive to operators and vessel crews. But there is a problem. The only way to get fuel, mud, cement and deck cargo to the boats is by truck along what is charitably called Louisiana Highway 1.
Long and winding road for royalties
DOWN at land's end in south Louisiana sits Port Fourchon. The big deep-water supply boats and anchor-handlers breeze in and out of Fourchon all hours of the day and night, docking only long enough to take on fuel, water, bulk items like mud and cement and whatever deck cargo is waiting for them.
