The spill occurred at Belize Natural Energy's (BNE) Mike Usher-2 well on block-5b, one of five producers brought on stream a year ago in the Cayo Creek region of the Corazor basin, an area of natural oil seepages located seven kilometres from the frontier with neighbouring Guatamala.

The spill followed a mechanical failure inside the oil, water and gas separator, resulting in a pressure drop.
