The government welcomed the ruling that its prosecution of the now defunct oil company was not politically motivated.
However, the court said Russian authorities were unfair in imposing such a speedy punishment over alleged tax violations and did not give Yukos enough time to prepare its defence.
The court’s nine-judge panel found the government violated three articles of the European Convention on Human Rights, including the right to a fair trial.
