Mackenzie pipeline costs soar

The cost of the proposed Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline project has ballooned to C$16.2 billion ($13.8 billion) more than double the initial estimates, writes Blake Wright.

The estimate is based on updated information operator Imperial Oil filed with Canada's National Energy Board&Joint Review Panel this week.

The updated information includes project costs of C$3.5 billion for the gas-gathering system, and C$7.8 billion for the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline.

In addition, the estimated cost of the development of anchor fields is C$4.9 billion. Imperial's 2004 estimate for the total project was about C$7.5
