Macondo spillage claims

THE US JUSTICE Department is preparing to re-engage the fight to claim billions of dollars in compensation from BP for the Macondo oil spill in the next phase of the civil trial in federal court in New Orleans — as a new report by a UK petroleum engineering professor claims far less oil was spilled than was estimated.

According to the US government, about 4.1 million barrels of oil emptied into the US Gulf from the well over three months.

That amount excludes the roughly 800,000 barrels of oil that BP managed to collect in its containment efforts.

If BP is found to be negligent, it could be fined as much as $17.6 billion under the federal Clean Water Act.
