China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) claims to have made a major natural gas discovery in the desert Tarim basin in China's north-western Xinjiang region that could provide the resources to support its plan to boost oil and gas production in the region.
The company announced in early October that discovery well Bozhi 9 flowed 418,200 cubic metres of natural gas and 115 cubic metres of condensate upon test.
