AROUND 300,000 kilogrammes of gas flooded to the sea surface from a ruptured subsea pipeline connected to Shell’s Curlew floating production, storage and offloading vessel in an accident early this year, Upstream can reveal.

According to industry sources, the figure is Shell’s own estimate of the volume of natural gas that was released during the incident, which happened in January.

That volume dwarfs any other leak in the previous year for which data is currently available.
