GulfSlope Energy is temporarily abandoning an exploration well targeting the Tau prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, citing mechanical difficulties that prevented the well from reaching its intended depth, writes Kathrine Schmidt.
However, the US independent said it remains confident in the potential of the subsalt objective and will set up the shallow-water well to allow for re-entry.
The operator has its sights set on prolific subsalt formations found at deeper reaches in the US Gulf but is drilling for them in shallower water, which could help keep development costs lower.
