Contractor Saipem used the Menck MHU 500 hammer, powered via its electrical umbilical, for the work beneath 1425 metres of water.
The same model of hammer established the previous record of 1311 metres last year on the Marco Polo foundation piles, also in the US Gulf.
It delivers a blow equivalent to dropping a 50 tonne weight from a height of one metre.
