Mexico has a split market for natural gas with plentiful supply in the north based on easy access to abundant and relatively inexpensive imports from US shale plays but much less availability in the south-east to which there is a lack of pipeline connectivity, writes Mark Hillier.

Carlos Trevino, outgoing chief executive of Pemex, told Upstream that the Mexican state oil company has responded to this disconnect with a plan launched this summer to install a floating storage and regasification unit at the port of Pajaritos to import liquefied natural gas.
