It is expected that Minc will try to show environmentalists that he is serious about curbing Amazon deforestation while resisting pressure from agricultural lobby groups and a powerful pro-industrial development wing of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's Workers Party led-administration.
Carlos Minc, a founder of Brazil's Green Party in 1986, took over from Marina Silva, who resigned in frustration after a long battle to hold back deforestation.
