Seismic data shot in frontier waters of the Santos and Campos basin has reinforced the impression that Brazil's pre-salt province could harbour billions of barrels of undiscovered oil and gas, writes Gareth Chetwynd.

Working in consultation with Brazilian geologist Pedro Zalan, Spectrum Geo has been mapping prospects, including many that that extend beyond the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

In 2004, Brazil made formal claims to extend its EEZ up to a limit of 560 kilometres along vast stretches of its coast.
