Obiang's government has accused Moto of being behind the alleged coup plot. Moto was allegedly flown to Mali the day before the coup was due to take place in readiness to assume power in oil rich Equatorial Guinea.

However, according to a statement issued by Moto's government-in-exile, the allegations are false, said a report from African news agency Afrol.

Referring to the "mercenary" group being held in Malabo, the statement said: "There are people in Equatorial Guinea that at this moment are shivering with pain and anxiety they have been detained for six months in deplorable conditions for having participated in a farce that never existed, according to the judiciary in Zimbabwe."
