Russian scientists have discovered more mysterious sinkholes on the remote Yamal Peninsula of west Siberia close to Gazprom’s flagship Bovanenkovo gas field.

The findings of this survey came after last year’s discovery by a Gazprom helicopter crew of a huge crater — about 60 metres wide and 35 metres deep — 30 kilo­metres from Bovanenkovo.

Scientists do not know why the sinkholes are forming, but they appear to have ruled out the possibility that they are the result of increased drilling activity and gas production at Bovanenkovo, which went into operation in 2012.
