Drilled to a depth of 4850 metres by the semi-submersible Maersk Deliverer in waters 1143 metres deep, the discovery de-risks one of West Africa’s last frontier plays.
Analysts said the find may represent the country’s first commercial discovery, but state-owned National Oil Company of Liberia (Nocal) emphasised that any development may take up to seven years.
Nocal’s new chief executive Randolph McClain, appointed just last week, was “cautiously optimistic”.
