The monetisation of oil finds in Uganda and Kenya, and major gas discoveries off Mozambique and Tanzania, will have a huge impact on each of these countries’ economies.
Their development will bring in sorely needed revenues to cash-strapped governments that, if spent wisely, could underpin investments in education, health, infrastructure and training of populations that are growing fast.
However, the governance of oil and gas activities leaves a lot to be desired, with fears expressed by outside observers and internal civil society groups that all four countries could go the way of Nigeria.
