After six years of joint technology development, the two companies recently completed the first commercial use of steerable drilling liner (SDL) in a new production well at the Grane heavy-oil field off Norway.
The well will produce 350,000 barrels of oil that would otherwise have been left in the ground.
Potentially, SDL wells could increase recovery from difficult reservoirs and ageing fields by up to 1 million barrels per well, according to Statoil.
