New Zealand has enough reserves of natural gas to meet domestic demand for just over 10 years, according to government statistics.

Gas reserves, defined as quantities that are commercially recoverable, stood at 1.9 trillion cubic feet at 1 January 2018, which represents around 10.5 years of demand at 2017 demand levels, said the government.

There has been a 5% decline in proven plus probable gas reserves estimates in the past year.
