NEXEN Energy is struggling with damage control after a new pipeline installed at its Long Lake thermal oil sands site leaked more than 31,000 barrels of emulsion fluid in Northern Alberta, Canada.
Since the incident occurred on 15 July the Canadian operator — acquired by state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) in December 2013 — has been working overtime to figure out what caused 31,500 barrels of fluid comprised of crude, sand and water to leak over 16,000 cubic metres.
