Nigerian operators will be fined more heavily for gas flaring and attract penalties for failing to provide adequate data on gas flaring following the introduction of new legislation, writes Barry Morgan.
The new Gas Flaring (Prohibition & Punishment) law was passed last week by the Senate, repealing the 1979 Associated Gas Re-injection Act.
Operators unable to furnish the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) with up-to-date information will be fined $15,000 and could potentially face six months of jail time while a penalty of $2 per thousand cubic feet of gas flared will be levied for companies producing more than 10,000 barrels per day of oil.
