Widely cast as Nigeria’s Good Soldier, Muhammadu Buhari had a reputation as military head of state in the mid-1980s for imposing brusque discipline, keen to root out graft without fear or favour.

Buhari’s supporters hoped his second coming in the guise of a civilian president would revitalise the economy and clean the Augean stables.

Instead, his administration stands accused of party bias, economic illiteracy and compromising an independent judiciary.
