While other contractors have been pursuing ideas that involve radical changes to conventional deep-water drilling arrangements, Noble's initiative leaves procedures much as they always have been.
By using aluminium alloy instead of steel as the material for a standard 21-inch marine riser, Noble has been able to retain familiar practices, while, at the same time, more or less halving the submerged weight of the riser.
