In January 2003, Noble quietly spudded a well in 3100 feet of water off Brazil using a lightweight riser built from aluminium alloy.
Use of this material for a standard 21-inch riser virtually halves the submerged weight while allowing familiar practices to be retained. Since then the company has taken delivery of two more aluminium risers, and has another heavier-duty example on the way.
