Saad Ali Hussein al-Bayati, the head of the Iraqi Oil Pipelines Company northern division, was killed by unidentified gunmen near the city of Kirkuk. He was a North Oil board member.

Bayati, a Sunni Arab originally from the Salahaddin province town of Sulayman Bek, was in his government-issued utility vehicle with a government licence plate.

It is unclear if the assassins targeted the vehicle because of the government plates or whether they were specifically after Bayati.
