The UK's BG Group and others have been looking into exploiting the inherent tendency of natural gases to form solid hydrates in the presence of water.
"We deliberately set out to exploit something that people generally try to avoid like the plague," said Derek Tagg, senior project development manager for BG, at a recent Institute of Petroleum conference in London.
Hydrates would be produced on a floating vessel by mixing gas and water.
