So far the battle has been confined to a limited area in Kargil in north-east Kashmir, where Indian armed forces are trying to eject the intruding Islamic Mujahidin, who New Delhi has alleged are actually regular soldiers of the Pakistani Army. Islamabad vehemently denies this charge. No foreign oil executive in New Delhi or Karachi would comment publicly on the troubles.

INTERNATIONAL oil players in India and Pakistan fear that the mounting casualty toll in the battle-torn Kargil sector in Kashmir and a hardening of public opinion on both sides of the border may push the two countries into a full military confrontation.
