Oman had said earlier this year that it was postponing by at least one year its plan to finance the project in the Persian Gulf, with Iran announcing that it would proceed with the scheme anyway.

Oman signed a memorandum of understanding in 2008 to effectively finance the development of the estimated 50 trillion cubic feet of gas at Kish in exchange for some of the eventual 3 billion cubic feet per day output being piped to the Qalhat facility, which is underused because of a shortage of gas.
