Mohammed al-Barwani's fortunes took a dramatic turn in 1986 when he decided to quit his job as an engineer with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and start his own business.
"I left because I realised I was earning more from my small real estate investment than from my job with PDO," he says. "I had always wanted to be a businessman so I decided to try my luck."
