Omo well hope for Ethiopia

TULLOW Oil has had an encouraging hit with hydro-carbons on its debut probe in southern Ethiopia, but has had to sidetrack the well following hole instability, with final results expected late May, writes Barry Morgan.

Drilled on its South Omo block, Sabisa-1 penetrated to a total depth of 1810 metres, hitting hydrocarbons in sands underlying a thick claystone top seal.

UK-listed Tullow has a 50% operating stake in South Omo. Africa Oil has 30% and US oil player Marathon Oil is on 20%.

Africa Oil chief executive Keith Hill insisted the hydrocarbon suggestions were “highly encouraging as evidence of a working petroleum system in a previously undrilled basin”.
