Austrian oil and gas company OMV has approached ExxonMobil and other operators about a potential acquisition of upstream assets in south-east Australia.

The acquisition would be in keeping with OMV's ambitions to expand its Asia-Pacific portfolio following its recent acquisition of Shell's New Zealand upstream business and its investment in Malaysia that resulted in the emergence of SapuraOMV.

Sources said OMV has recently met ExxonMobil representatives in Melbourne and in Houston to express its interest in some, or all, of the US supermajor's upstream assets in the Gippsland basin, better known as the Bass Strait assets.
