French giant Total’s closely-watched Onesiphoros West-1 wildcat off Cyprus was a disappointment, discovering only non-commercial volumes of gas, write Iain Esau and Nick Roumpis.

However, the probe confirmed the much-hyped carbonate play established in Egypt by Eni a few years ago with its 30-trillion cubic foot Zohr discovery does extend into Cypriot waters.

Cyprus Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said the exploration well found less than 500 billion cubic feet of gas but expressed encouragement that gas similar to Zohr was discovered in a carbonate reservoir in Block 11.
