Onshore rig count drops sharply with data underlining industry gloom

The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US fell by 10 for a total of 757, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes. That figure is down 1172 from the same period a year ago. RigData — an alternative rig-count service that also contributes to the Baker Hughes tally — put the active rig count at 823 in data published a day later, representing a drop of 31 from the previous week.

The
