Statoil has managed to boost production by 35% from its ageing Snorre field in the North Sea this year, but the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) fears the initiative could undermine the field’s long-term recovery levels.

The increase in output from the Snorre tension-leg platform to just over 100,000 barrels per day comes in the midst of a contentious debate about whether or not the Norwegian national oil company and its field partners should move forward with the Snorre 2040 redevelopment plan.
