About 100 Penans, or aboriginal hunter-gatherers, have blocked access to the project, which they claim is affecting their lands and livelihoods.

The 521-kilometre 36-inch diameter onshore pipeline will deliver feedstock gas from fields off Sabah through the Sabah oil and gas terminal in Kimanis to the Petronas liquefied natural gas complex in Bintulu, Sarawak.

The gas trunkline is being installed by Indian contractor Punj Lloyd, which estimated completion in March next year.
