The 36-kilometre access road will link wells on Block 31 to a proposed river port on the River Napo. The block overlaps a large segment of the Yasuni national park, an unspoilt reserve of the Amazon rainforest that is listed as a Unesco biosphere reserve.
The project is opposed by indigenous groups, including the Huaorani tribe, along with an array of non-governmental organisations and conservation groups.
