Brazil’s Petrobras is set to appraise its Basilisco heavy oil discovery in Block BM-C-35, as it works to unlock a new deep-water hydrocarbon province in the southern section of the prolific Campos basin.

The new campaign is expected to take place despite the company sharply reducing exploration efforts to preserve cash, suggesting the state-controlled company sees good potential at Basilisco.

Upstream understands Petrobras will split the Basilisco appraisal effort into two phases, which may result in drilling as many as five new wells in BM-C-35 by 2021.
