Petrobras made the Harpia find two years ago in Block BM-PAMA-3 in 2061 metres of water with the Diamond Offshore semi-submersible rig Ocean Courage.
The campaign took almost a year and cost more than $350 million.
The well detected the presence of light oil in the primary target, but stopped short of secondary targets and source rocks due to mechanical limitations.
Para-Maranhao is similar to the Foz do Amazonas basin, where subsea currents from the Amazon River and high temperature-high pressure drilling conditions are among the challenges.
