A consortium comprising UK-listed contractor Petrofac and China Petroleum Engineering Construction Company (CPECC) is in pole position to secure a potential multi-billion dollar contract to build up to five super-sized integrated gas oil separation plants (GOSP) that will be used for the ongoing development of the BP-operated Rumaila oilfield in Iraq.
Well-placed industry sources said that the 50:50 joint venture between Petrofac and CPECC has offered the lowest bid, pegged at about $3 billion, for the engineeering, procurement and construction contract, beating competition from three other candidates — Samsung Engineering of South Korea, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, also of South Korea, and a partnership of US contracting giant KBR with Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering of China.
