Petrofac first signalled its ambition by hiring several ex-Saipem executives to boost the talent pool available to carry out offshore oil and gas projects.
The UK player is understood to have approached the market before Christmas through Dutch vessel design house Ulstein Sea of Solutions, calling for price quotations on a high-specification deep-water pipelay vessel, DLV 5000.
DLV 5000 will be built to the Ulstein SOC 5000 design and will be equipped with a DP3 system also designed by the Dutch outfit.
