Petrom and OMV hope new hi-tech approaches will lead to finds in areas of mature fields.
"We have already identified acreage there (in Romania)," said OMV's chief financial officer David Davis.
Earlier this year, OMV announced its biggest gas find in 20 years in the Vienna basin in Austria.
The discovery of up to 4 billion cubic metres of potential new reserves was made possible through the company's "highly developed 3D seismic, and the use of modern, deep-drilling technology", E&P boss Helmut Langanger said in April.
