On the morning of Tuesday 3 May the sky above Fort McMurray was a brilliant blue and the weather was unseasonably warm for spring. Birds were singing, a breeze was blowing and, for the more than 80,000 residents of the northern Alberta city, life as they knew it was business as usual.
All that changed by mid-afternoon when the wind picked up and the once-blue sky began to cloud over in a smokey gray haze.
Within
