The area has a long tradition of industrial land use and lies just across the water from Canvey Island where the UK´s first LNG imports were landed back in the 1960s. They stopped in the 1980s when North Sea production started to ramp up.

In 2002, the then Lattice Group unveiled plans to convert a natural gas peak shaving plant on Grain into the UK´s first new LNG import terminal for 30 years.
