A new technology that melts rock to plug and abandon wells has been successfully tested in the UK amid hopes it could cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the decommissioning bill for both the UK taxpayer and the industry, writes Rob Watts.
The new technique, developed by Interwell, has been tested for the first time in Europe by Spirit Energy in Caythorpe, Yorkshire, on an onshore gas well.
