The current regulator — the Department of Petroleum & Energy (DPE) — has for years been labelled inept by the industry.

One year ago, Petroleum Minister William Duma bowed to the industry’s requests that the DPE be converted into an authority similar to the Mineral Resources Authority, which services PNG’s mining industry.

Duma told delegates at the PNG Mining & Petroleum Conference that he expects the new authority to be fully operational by July 2015, and that it is an “urgent” task.
