For the last six decades, the economic fortunes of Daqing have depended on oil. The city is built on the gigantic field of the same name and most of its residents rely on oil and related businesses for a living, writes Xu Yihe.

The field's health and the city's fortunes are inextricable – when the reserve is depleted and the oil price dives, wells are shut in, workers retrench and offices are emptied.
